Republican hopefuls (from left) Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former President Donald Trump, and former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley addressing the crowds in Iowa on Monday.?

Political candidates and commentators who are now arguing for “Trumpism without Trump” might want to recall some 20th century history: After Adolf Hitler took office and consolidated his power, his first major mass killing was not against his open enemies, but against the members of his own Nazi party whose loyalty he doubted.

If Donald Trump is returned to the presidency, who can say that he might not follow this example? Doesn’t his usual rhetoric regularly promise vengeance against all who oppose or displease him? Who will he turn on first?

Perhaps our new governor and our representatives in the House and Senate, are wise to leave no doubt about their sole (soul?) allegiance to Trump.
