SEC Championship Football

Can teams win their bye weeks? If so, the LSU Tigers were big winners while they sat at home and watched chaos unfold across college football. The Bayou Bengals were busy preparing for the upcoming matchup with Ole Miss when conference foes like Alabama, Missouri and Tennessee were upset. This means the SEC is now wide open, which puts even more importance on Week 7.

It's year three of the Brian Kelly era in Baton Rouge. The successful head coach has done well to turn around an LSU program that was left in ruins before he arrived on campus. The Tigers have won 10 games each of the last two seasons, but they have yet to get over the hump.

The LSU faithful are hoping this is the year that the Tigers' fortunes shift. The landscape of college football has changed as we know it and the new format benefits perennial contenders such as Penn State and LSU.

The SEC has done away with conferences, meaning one loss to an opponent like Alabama won't doom the Tigers' hopes of making their second SEC Championship Game in three years under Kelly. Further, an expanded 12-team College Football Playoff means teams can afford two or three regular season losses if they're convincing enough throughout the rest of the year.

Whether this will ultimately benefit LSU or not remains to be seen. The Tigers do have an easily navigatable schedule this year, but there are also a lot of question marks surrounding this young team.

Do oddsmakers feel any differently about LSU's chances after its latest result? Here are the Tigers' updated postseason odds via FanDuel Sportsbook:

LSU Tigers postseason odds

Odds to win the CFP National Championship:?+6000

Odds to make the College Football Playoff:?+250

Odds to win the SEC Championship:?+2300

While on the surface, it seemed like a nothing weekend for the Tigers given their ranking didn't change, a lot was happening behind the scenes. LSU remains a long shot (+6000) to win the College Football Playoff National Championship, but its odds got shorter in every other market.

Kelly's men moved from +350 to +250 to make the inaugural 12-team CFP after chaos unfolded ahead of them. Chief among that chaos was Vanderbilt's win over Alabama and Arkansas' win over Tennessee. This went a long way in blowing the SEC wide open, as well. LSU's odds to win the conference now sit at +2300, which is down from +2800 this time last week.

The Tigers are now continuing preparations for their most important game of the year thus far. Their date with the Rebels in Death Valley will either make or break their season, so bet accordingly. If you believe the hosts can get the job done on Saturday night, you likely won't find better odds than those right now.
