Hurricane forecasters are encouraging Gulf Coast residents to monitor the progression of a tropical disturbance located in the Caribbean Sea, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

The trough of low pressure is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms over the southwestern Caribbean, forecasters said Tuesday morning. While moving northwestward and approaching the Gulf of Mexico, the system could form into a tropical depression at the end of this week or this weekend.?

Forecasters said there is a 40% chance of the system developing into a tropical depression or storm within the next week. Development is expected to take longer than initially expected, forecasters said.?

Tropical Storm Joyce and Hurricane Isaac dissipated in the Atlantic Ocean, but two disturbances west of Africa continue to gain strength.?

Tropical Storm Kirk formed Monday morning and was moving west-northwest at 14 mph with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph by 7 a.m. Tuesday, forecasters said.?

Meanwhile, a disturbance in the eastern tropical Atlantic continues to produce disorganized showers and thunderstorms several hundred miles away from Cabo Verde. Forecasters said the system has an 80% chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next two days while slowly drifting westward over the water.
