A woman who was killed in a Mid-City shooting over the weekend was identified Tuesday morning by the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office.
Raven Francis, 29, was shot and killed early Sunday morning.
Police responded to a call at 2:45 a.m. after a fight broke out between two groups of people at a business in the 4100 block of South Carrollton Avenue. An unknown suspect opened fire at one group as they fled in a vehicle, causing the car to crash into a fire hydrant at Baudin and South Solomon streets, police said.?
Paramedics treated four victims wounded by gunfire after the car crash, police said. Francis, the fifth victim, was taken to a hospital, where she later died.
'Next steps'
New Orleans City councilman Joe Giarrusso identified the business where the fight erupted as the Shamrock bar, where two additional people were shot on July 13 and three others were murdered in 2020.
Giarrusso said his staff plans to meet with the New Orleans Police Department next week to "discuss next steps."?
"The bottom line is that when things start escalating and it moves away from a single incident to repeated problems then we have to look at the business at the heart of those problems," Giarrusso said.
New Orleans city leaders also looked into a nearby business earlier this year when a security guard was shot dead outside of Wit's Inn at 141 North Carrollton Ave.
The shooting came in April after business owners in the area reported problems to the city for the last year about illegal parties and excessive noise at the bar. Mayor LaToya Cantrell said that the Wit's Inn's owner had made every effort to "keep his staff and patrons safe."?
Giarrusso said "the problem is the bar creating the atmosphere" and that the solution is an easy fix.?
"I need enforcement," he said.?
Attempts to reach Shamrock's owner by phone weren't immediately successful.?
'Heartbroken'
A woman who identified herself as Francis' cousin expressed her grief in a Facebook post Monday evening.?
"I go to sleep thinking about you and wake up thinking about you," the woman wrote.
Another friend wrote on Facebook that he was "heartbroken" by Francis' death. He expressed how sorry he was that she is no longer with her children, calling her "one of the best people on earth."
