Larry Green, a former northshore judge who oversaw the 22nd Judicial District Family Court docket for eight years, died Oct. 10. He was 88.

Born in the community of Sun, Green graduated from the LSU School of Business in 1958 and Tulane Law School in 1964.

After law school, Green opened a practice in Covington and in 1992 was elected to a judgeship on the 22nd Judicial District Court, which handles court functions in St. Tammany and Washington parishes.

He served as a judge for 16 years before retiring in 2008.

Former 22nd Judicial District Court Judge Elaine DiMiceli, who served alongside Green, remembered him as an “easygoing individual who was very kind to people.”

At the time they served together, DiMiceli said, the court was growing, as the northshore population surged. She said Green for several years handled Family Court functions alone, which freed the other judges to work on keeping up with the growing court docket.

“That was a big help to us,” she said. “Family Court takes up a lot of time.”

Green, who was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army after graduating from LSU, also spent seven years in the Army Reserves, completing his service as a captain in the Judge Advocate General Corps, according to his obituary.

Green was also a member and past president of both the Covington and St. Tammany Bar Associations. He also served on the boards of the St. Tammany Art Association, Christwood and CASA. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Covington for more than 50 years, and also was a longtime member of the Rex Carnival organization.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Currie Green; a son, John Hays Green; a daughter, Mary Green Rentschler; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Oct. 18 at Christ Episcopal Church in Covington.
