When it opened in 1949, the Hotel Monteleone’s Carousel Bar didn’t include an overhead canopy, as shown in this Times-Picayune image, although the hotel set the carousel theme with the artwork chosen to adorn the walls.

A circa 1960 postcard shows the circus-striped cloth canopy that hung over the Hotel Monteleone’s Carousel Bar for years. The elaborately carved canopy dominating the bar today was installed in 1992. Tennessee Williams was a fan of the bar, and an artwork created for Saints and Sinners festival this year captures the setting.
