A New Orleans Police Department officer assaulted a member of the L.B. Landry marching band during the Muses Mardi Gras parade Thursday evening as the band stopped briefly on St. Charles Ave., according to videos of the incident posted on social media.

Multiple people caught the incident on video. In those videos, as the band was preparing to resume marching and make the corner of Canal and St. Charles, an NOPD officer shoved one of the teens who playing his cornet hard enough to knock him out of line and into another band member. Here's one video, and a second, clearer angle can be found here:

The two students exchanged words with the officer, at which point what appears to be a New Orleans Sheriff's deputy shoved the second student, before the band began marching and the two young men moved off. Based on the videos reviewed by Gambit, it does not appear that the student and the officers had any interaction prior to the assault.

NOPD did not return a request for comment before press time. This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
